Turn Undead and its Effects

When a Cleric or Paladin has Turn Undead activated, every round the game compares the EXP Level of all Undead creatures within 15-20 feet against the Turn Undead level of the character performing that action. If his TU level is less than their EXP level (or sometimes as much as 3 levels higher than theirs, the game is a bit inconsistent on this point), nothing happens: He's acting as a conduit for Positive Energy channelled directly from his god, but it's not strong enough for the Undead critters to even notice. If his TU level is 0 to 6 levels higher than their EXP level, they feel a very real threat to the energies that sustain their Undeath, and for a couple of rounds they will seek to do nothing but flee from the Cleric/Paladin, fighting back only when they are persistently attacked. Finally, if the Cleric or Paladin's Turn Undead level is at least 7 levels higher than the Undead creature's EXP level, they will die instantly. Note: Only Turn Undead performed by Good- and Neutral-aligned characters will destroy Undead. When a high-level Evil Cleric uses Turn Undead, the enemies are not vaporized, but rather unavoidably Charmed, and will serve the Cleric unquestioningly for at least a few rounds (after which they can always be Turned again). Evil Clerics can also use this ability to Turn Paladins.

The table at right lists (roughly) the Turn Undead levels required to impose Fear and Death/Charm on various types of Undead creatures. Certain examples of each creature type may require higher TU levels than listed here, especially if they are unusually powerful.
