Character Creation — Monks

MONK
Race: Human
Alignment: Any Lawful

Description: Monks are priests not of any god, but rather of the human body, establishing a spiritual awareness of their own form and the energy, called qi, that flows through all things. They train themselves both outwardly and inwardly: They undergo rigorous practice of the complex martial-arts techniques that make them deadly combatants even when completely unarmed, and meditate to gain understanding of qi and the paths by which it moves. By combining these disciplines, Monks can learn to shrug off the physical attachments and ailments that trouble the rest of us, become one with their surroundings whenever they wish, and slow—or even stop—the flow of qi in another creature's body.

Notes: The "Strengths" and "Weaknesses" listed for each base class are intended both as a general description of the class, and compared to the other classes of the same superclass. In the descriptions of the kits, however, the Advantages and Disadvantages are always directly relative to their base class.

The Monk's Fist has a range of 2, meaning you can punch and kick from the same distance as a person using a Spear or other 2-handed melee weapon. That's right, your arms & legs are 7 feet long.

In the table to the right, the columns indicate the the Experience Level of a Monk, the Experience Points required for a Monk to reach that level, and their level-based stats:

The amount of hitpoints they would gain at that level ("+CON" indicating the additional hitpoint modifier from a high or low Constitution stat),
The base THAC0 of their unarmed attacks,
The enchantment level of the Monk's fist,
The base amount of Blunt damage done by a successful hit,
The Monk's base Attacks per Round when attacking with fists,
Their base Armor Class,
The number of Proficiency Points they would gain at that level,
The base Magic Resistance of a Monk at that level,
Their Saving Throws (given in this order: vs. Death, vs. Wands, vs. Polymorph, vs. Breath, and vs. Spells),
The amount by which their base Movement Rate is enhanced.
